MIXTAPES: MISPR!NT x EVELYNS
Melodic Skate Punk, GTA Grit, and a Band Growing Up Fast
Born out of Hamilton’s cracked sidewalks and skate‑scuffed parking lots, Evelyns is the kind of melodic skate‑punk band that shouldn’t exist anymore — young, hungry, and dialled‑in. Started by George at thirteen and now rolling as a five‑piece force, they’re pulling from early Gob, Trunk, and MXPX while carving out something sharp, fast, and unmistakably theirs.
The name comes from a dark Hamilton legend, the riffs come from late‑night obsession, and the momentum feels like a band sprinting toward their next full‑length with zero intention of slowing down.
“The name actually comes from Evelyn Dick and that whole Hamilton murder case from the ’40s.”

Mispr!nt: Thirteen is early to start a band. What pushed you into punk instead of doing normal kid stuff?
Evelyns: Honestly we’re still doing normal “kid” stuff… attending school and focusing on passing every class, but punk just became the thing that took over. We all got into bands from family members, local shows and YouTube rabbit holes, and once we realized people our age could actually start bands instead of just listening to them, that was it. It felt way more exciting playing in a punk band than focusing on homework and sitting in a classroom all day.

Mispr!nt: You’re seventeen now and already addicted to playing shows. What was the moment that locked you in?
Evelyns: Honestly, I think it was the first time we played a show and realized people actually cared. Seeing people move around and come up to talk to us — that just felt different from practicing in a basement. After that it kinda stopped feeling like a hobby and started feeling like something we wanted to keep chasing. Since then we’ve been trying to play as much as possible.

Mispr!nt: Your sound pulls from early Gob, Trunk, and MXPX. What inspiration are you pulling from those bands, and what’s pure Evelyns?
Evelyns: We definitely pull from all those bands in different ways. Early Gob has that fast, catchy energy, Trunk had that raw skate‑punk feel, and MXPX always had solid songwriting without overcomplicating things. I think what we take most is the attitude — keeping it fun, playing loud, and writing songs people will actually remember.
What’s pure Evelyns is probably that we’re not trying to recreate any of it exactly. A lot of our songs come from whatever we’re listening to now and just from playing together and working on our sound. We like keeping things a little messy, a little emotional, and making music that feels good live more than choosing one specific sound.
Mispr!nt: The name “Evelyns” comes from a Hamilton murder story from the ’40s. What drew you to that dark origin?
Evelyns: The name actually comes from Evelyn Dick and that whole Hamilton murder case from the ’40s. It wasn’t really about the crime itself — we just got interested in strange local history and the fact that it’s one of those stories people around here still know about decades later. The name had this eerie, memorable feel to it and we liked that it had a story behind it instead of just picking something random.
Mispr!nt: GTA punk is a mix of skateparks, basements, and clubs. Where does Evelyns feel most at home in the scene?
Evelyns: Probably basements and smaller DIY shows more than anything. Clubs are sick too, but there’s something different when everyone’s packed into a room and actually there for the bands. Those shows feel way more personal and that’s where we’ve always felt most comfortable.

Mispr!nt: As a four‑piece melodic skate‑punk band, what’s the dynamic?
Evelyns: It’s pretty equal honestly. Everyone throws ideas around and nobody’s really afraid to say if something sucks or could be better. We all listen to slightly different stuff too, so that helps keep it from sounding one‑dimensional. At the end of the day we just try to make songs we’d actually wanna hear live.
Mispr!nt: You’ve been writing since you were thirteen. What’s the biggest shift in your songwriting since the early days?
Evelyns: Early on it was mostly just writing whatever came to mind and finishing songs as fast as possible. Now we’re a bit more patient with it and actually cut stuff if it’s not working instead of keeping everything. We still don’t overcomplicate it though — if everyone’s into it and it sounds good, we roll with it.
Mispr!nt: There’s talk of a second full‑length. What’s the scoop?
Evelyns: We’ve been writing a lot but we honestly don’t know yet if it’ll end up being a full length. Right now we’re just making songs and seeing what feels right instead of forcing a format. But the newer stuff definitely feels more dialed‑in while still keeping the same energy.
Mispr!nt: Every young band has a disaster show that becomes legend. What’s your best “everything went sideways” story?
Evelyns: We covered “The Joker” once and somehow that turned into our disaster show story. Someone in the crowd got genuinely mad because they thought the lyrics were too misogynistic and we were standing there like… dude, this song came out way before any of us were alive and we’re covering it as a joke. Nothing crazy happened but it definitely became one of those moments we still laugh about after.
Mispr!nt: You’re growing up inside the scene while shaping it. What’s the hardest part of being a young band in the GTA punk world — and what keeps you hungry?
Evelyns: Probably just getting people to take you seriously when you’re younger. A lot of the time you’re trying to book shows, practice, write, and still do regular life at the same time. But we’ve also met a lot of really cool people through it, and every time a show goes well or someone actually knows the words it makes you wanna keep doing it.
